China’s Consulate in Switzerland calls off Tibetan New Year reception

According to reliable sources the Chinese Consulate-General in Zurich, Switzerland, has cancelled a planned reception on February 2, 2008 on the occasion of the Tibetan New Year. The obvious aim of the planned reception was to invite as many Tibetans living in Switzerland and Liechtenstein as possible.

The local Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, representing the Tibetans living in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, adopted unanimously a strong-worded resolution on January 19, 2008, calling on the Tibetans to stay away from this event. As a result, fearing a total boycott of the reception by Tibetans the Chinese Consulate-General called off the event.

The resolution states that «in occupied Tibet the Chinese authorities are using naked force, coercion and intimidation to suppress the slightest dissent to Chinese rule. Outside of the People’s Republic of China, the Chinese government is conducting a determined psychological warfare with huge resources in order to weaken the Tibetan freedom movement in free countries». The resolution further recalls «the tremendous suffering and destructions inflicted upon the people of Tibet by the illegitimate invasion and occupation of Tibet…» and reminds the people of the fact that the Tibetans inside Tibet are presently undergoing the « harshest wave of repression since the Cultural Revolution».

Karma Pangring, the President of the Tibetan Community in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, remarked: „The Tibetans living in Switzerland and Liechtenstein are deeply committed to the cause of Tibet and strongly support the leadership of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile. The Chinese government’s efforts to infiltrate, disrupt and weaken the Tibetan freedom movement in free countries will fail.”
