Speaker Concludes Weeklong Visit to Switzerland

Dharamshala: Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, Ven. Khenpo Sonam Tenphel, concluded his seven-day visit to Switzerland on Wednesday, 6 September. Speaker’s visit was organised by the Tibetan community of Swiss and Liechtenstein from 31 August to 6 September.

On 4 September, the Speaker met with Mario Fehr, member of the Swiss National Council and the Regierungsrat of the Zurich canton, Martin Burki, Vice President of the Municipal Council, Zurich, Swiss.

He also met with Maya Graf, the former Speaker of National Council of Switzerland and Green Party parliamentarian and Prisca Birrer Heimo, Social Democratic parliamentarian and also the President of Swiss Foundation for Consumer Protection (SKS) under the organization of Thomas Buchli, President of the Swiss Tibet Friendship Association.

During the meeting, the dignitaries discussed zealously on the present environmental condition of Tibet, the proliferating number of self-immolation, Chinese immigration in Tibet and the state of Tibetan language as well as the condition of political prisoners and repression of Tibetan religion.

The Swiss Tibet Friendship Association assured that they would work especially towards the issues of Tibet’s environment.

Speaker also appealed to the concerned authorities of Zurich and members of the Swiss National Council to render necessary support and redressal of grievances to the exiled Tibetan community in Switzerland.

He later met with Jampa Tsering Samdho, Tibetan parliamentarian from Europe constituency of the 16th Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, Representative Ngodup Dorjee, Office of Tibet, Geneva as well as the President and the Vice-President of the Tibetan community of Swiss and Liechtenstein.

Speaker Khenpo Sonam Tenphel left Switzerland for Delhi on 6 September.
