Tibetan Buddhist community urged to join Virtual Vesak prayers aimed at resolution of COVID-19 crisis

Virtual prayer session marking Buddha Poornima Diwas, dedicated to the resolution of the Coronavirus pandemic crisis organised by International Buddhist Confederation.

Dharamshala: The International Buddhist Confederation based in Delhi is organising a virtual celebration of Vesak – Buddha Poornima on 7 May, a day of honouring the auspicious birth, enlightenment and passing into parinirvana of Buddha.

On account of the world struggling from COVID-19 crisis, the event is dedicated to speedy resolution of the crisis.

The sacred ceremonies and prayers to be performed on the day will be live-streamed from the holiest sites of Sacred Garden, Lumbini, Mahabodhi temple and under the Bodhi Tree at Bodhgaya, Mulgandha Kuti Vihara, Sarnath and Parinirvana Stupa, Kushinagar.

The Kalon for Religion and Culture, Ven. Karma Gelek Yuthok, today congratulated the Secretary-General of the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC), New Delhi on his initiative in organizing Virtual Celebration and Prayers on Vesak or Buddha Poornima Day on May 7, 2020, at the four most sacred Buddhist places of Bodhgaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar and Lumbini.

He also expressed his support and appreciation to IBC head office for dedicating the event as Global Prayer Week to pray for the victims of COVID-19 and to honour the medical professionals and security personnel in the frontline of global fight-back against the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the Department of Religion and Culture, CTA has called on all Tibetan monastic and religious centres around the world through a special circular for joining the aforesaid Virtual Vesak Celebration and Global Prayer Week while maintaining the local lockdown rules.
