Around 200 people in Zurich, Switzerland gathered marching through the Zurich city center and assembling in front of the before the Chinese Consulate.
Geneva: The Tibetan communities based in six cities across the Central and Eastern Europe organized protests calling to hold China accountable and to resist the oppressive regime of Chinese Communist Party. The Tibetans, Uyghurs, Southern Mongolians, Hongkongers and pro-democracy activists joined together along with supporters from governments and non-governmental organizations observing the Global Day of Action on 1st October 2020,
Coinciding with the anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the protests with safe COVID-19 measures were held in Milan and Rome in Italy, Vienna in Austria, Zurich in Switzerland, and Berlin and Munich in Germany.
In Zurich, Switzerland the protest march was jointly organized by the Tibetan Community of Switzerland and Lichtenstein, Swiss-Tibetan Friendship Association, Tibetan Women’s Association and Tibetan Youth Association, Europe. Around 200 people had gathered marching through the Zurich city center and assembling in front of the before the Chinese Consulate. Mr.Tony Ryf from the board of Swiss-Tibetan Friendship Association and Member of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile Samdo Jampa addressed the gathering.
The protest in Berlin, Germany was jointly organized by 11 organisations including the Tibetan community of Germany and International Campaign for Tibet with nearly 200 people protesting before the Chinese Consulate in Berlin, three German Parliamentarians– Chairwoman Gyde Jensen, Spokespersons Michael Brand and MP Peter Heidt of the Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid Committee. Tibetan Community members based in Munich also participated in the protest organized in Munich, Germany.
The Tibetan Community of Italy organized a protest demonstration in Milan, Italy along with the Italia Tibet Association. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, only 50 participants were allowed to participate in the demonstrations. Furthermore, a panel discussion was organized at Chamber of Deputies in Rome. Parliamentarians On. Paolo Formentini, On. Matteo Luigi Bianchi, On. Alessandro Giglio Vigna, On. Federico Mollicone, On. Enrico Borghi, On. Lia Quartapelle, On. Roberto Giachetti , Sen. Lucio Malan (da confermare) and former ambassador Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata were also present at the discussion.
The Tibetan Community of Austria organized a cycle rally across the capital city, Vienna starting from the Chinese Embassy, crossing the UN office and culminating in front of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, Vienna. Due to Covid-19 restrictions only 50 people were allowed to participate in the protest.
Representative Chhimey Rigzen from Tibet Bureau Geneva commended the strong and active participation by all the members of the Tibetan communities based under the jurisdiction of Tibet Bureau, Geneva. He could not participate in the events in person, however, noted that “our office will continue to support the Tibetan communities in organizing and drafting necessary documents wherever necessary. It is very important for the Tibetans to continue to organize and participate in such protests and demonstration to let China and the world know that we have not given up and we will never give up until peace and freedom is restored in Tibet.”
