Prof. Dr. Christian Schwarz-Schilling, former German Federal Minister and founder of the Schwarz-Schilling Foundation, passed away peacefully on 2 April 2026 in Frankfurt at the age of 95, surrounded by his family. A highly respected statesman, he was widely admired for his integrity, principled leadership, and lifelong commitment to public service. Beyond his national contributions, he was also a steadfast and long-standing friend of the Tibetan people, consistently advocating for justice, dialogue, and peaceful resolution.

Prayer ceremonies were held in Frankfurt on 17 April, followed by his burial in Berlin on 24 April 2026. Both occasions were attended by numerous dignitaries, colleagues, and well-wishers, reflecting the profound respect he commanded across communities and borders. Thinlay Chukki, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama from Office of Tibet, Geneva, attended both ceremonies and conveyed official messages of condolence on behalf of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration.

In his message, His Holiness the Dalai Lama expressed deep sorrow at the passing of his dear friend, recalling Prof. Schwarz-Schilling’s unwavering support for the Tibetan cause and his sincere efforts to foster greater understanding and dialogue. He described him as a valued ally whose life was marked by meaningful contributions and lasting impact.

The Sikyong of the Central Tibetan Administration also paid tribute, emphasising Prof. Schwarz-Schilling’s enduring commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and his active engagement with Tibetan leadership over many years. He highlighted his consistent advocacy for dialogue and mutual understanding, noting that his contributions were formally recognised with the International Campaign for Tibet’s Light of Truth Award in 2013.

Prof. Schwarz-Schilling is remembered as a distinguished statesman, a principled advocate for peace, and a compassionate individual whose legacy transcends borders. His passing marks a significant loss, and his lifelong dedication to justice, dialogue, and human dignity will continue to inspire future generations.
