Chinese Liaison Officer of the European Countries Participates in 36th Anniversary Commemoration of Tiananmen Square Massacre

Sangay Kyab, the Chinese Liaison Officer for European countries, participated in an online global conference held to commemorate the 36th anniversary of the 4 June Tiananmen Square Massacre. The virtual gathering title’ ‘1989 Democracy Movement and Democratic Reconstruction – 2025 Global Online Memorial Conference’ was organised by Sino Euro Voice, a pro-democracy advocacy group based in Germany.
The online event, held on the afternoon of 2 June, drew around 40 participants, including representatives from the Taiwanese, American, and Australian Chinese Liaison offices of Tibet, Tibetan participants, overseas Chinese activists, Uyghurs, and other ethnic groups.
Sangay Kyab, Chinese Liaison Officer at the Tibet Bureau in Geneva, represented the European Chinese Liaison Office and delivered remarks during the conference. In his address, he raised two critical points: the gap between rhetoric and action in commemorating the 4 June incident, and the lack of meaningful cooperation between Chinese and other ethnic groups striving for democratic change.
He stated, “To genuinely carry forward the spirit of the 1989 Democracy Movement, we must foster broader cooperation and solidarity across ethnic and national lines”. He stressed that any meaningful democratic reconstruction must directly address ethnic issues, adding, “Democracy today cannot be discussed without acknowledging ethnic realities.”
Highlighting the importance of historical recognition and mutual respect, he further stated, “Understanding ethnic issues requires recognising the authenticity of each group’s history, the inter-ethnic problems, and ensuring equal attention to both democratic rights and ethnic rights.”
Also attending the memorial event were Representative Kelsang Gyaltsen Bawa from the Office of Tibet in Taiwan, Tsultrim Gyatso, Chinese Liaison Officer from the Office of Tibet in Washington, D.C., and Dawa Sangmo, Chinese Liaison Officer from the Office of Tibet in Canberra. The annual commemoration serves as a reminder of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
